The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society and the Nickens family will host, “A Family’s Journey into the Life and Legacy of the Honorable Armistead S. Nickens,” presented by a panel of descendants, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock.
The free program will also be offered virtually and will be recorded. Nickens, who was born into a family of free people of color that included at least 12 veterans of the Revolutionary War, won election to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1871 and served two terms, becoming Lancaster County’s first Black elected official.
