Lady Dukes’ win streak comes to an end

Gloucester High School varsity softball players saw a pair of streaks come to an end Tuesday as the Menchville Monarchs defeated the Dukes, 2-0, in Newport News.

Gloucester’s 14-game winning streak, as well as a 12-game shutout streak by Mackenzie Smith and Kirsten Greene, was halted as the Dukes were shut out on only four hits.

Smith gave up a one-out RBI double in the first inning and a two-out RBI double in the third for the game’s only runs. In all, Smith gave up only three hits while striking out 12. Defensively, Gloucester did not commit an error.

Offensively, the Dukes could not get on track. Their best opportunity came in the sixth as Bridget Motley led off with a double to center field. With one out, Greene reached second base on a fielding error and throwing error to move Motley to third, but the Monarchs ended the inning on a strikeout and fly ball.
