Lady Dukes wallop Phantoms, 44-0

Gloucester’s Shelby Alto broke a Virginia High School League record with eight hits Tuesday in the Dukes’ 44-0 win over host Phoebus in Peninsula District softball action.

Alto recorded three hits in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings. She broke the record of seven hits in a game set by former Gloucester standout Kristie Hoeffer. Alto also had four RBIs in the contest.

Hannah Joyce, Rhiannon Miller and Taylor Distefano had four hits apiece, with Joyce and Miller tallying seven RBIs and Distefano contributing five. Distefano pitched a complete game, striking out 13 and allowing one hit.

Joyce had two hits and scored four runs Saturday to set a new VHSL record for career runs scored as the Dukes defeated Lafayette, 21-3, in Williamsburg. Makayla Jenkins pitched a two-hitter in the non-district game, giving up one run and striking out nine.
