Lady Dukes upset in district soccer

Fourth seed Denbigh upset number-one seed Gloucester 2-0 in the semifinals of the Peninsula District Girls Soccer Tournament Monday at GHS.

As the regular season champions, the Dukes had already secured a bid to the Eastern Region Tournament and will face Kellam High School at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Norfolk.

Denbigh’s Leslie Coates netted two first-half goals, one on a free kick, to give the Patriots an edge to hold onto Monday. Gloucester fought back in the second half and dominated play in a push to score. The Dukes came up short as multiple shots on goal either missed their mark or were stopped by the Denbigh keeper.

The Patriots will take on second seed Menchville tonight at GHS in battle for the district’s remaining bid to the regional tournament.
