Lady Dukes suffer first softball loss

After a 5-1 win over Menchville on Friday, the Gloucester High School girls saw their first softball loss of the season in a 4-0 bow to Kecoughtan on Tuesday.

GHS coach Red Lindsay said his Dukes played without enthusiasm and were flat the entire game with the Warriors. Kecoughtan took a 2-0 lead in the third inning where Gloucester committed three of its five errors.

Despite the loss, the Dukes still hold a one-game lead over Menchville and Kecoughtan. They are scheduled to host Hampton today and play at Woodside on Tuesday.
In the win over Menchville, Makayla Jenkins scattered five hits, walked one and kept the Monarchs at bay all afternoon while the defense played an error-free game. Hannah Joyce led off the first inning with a single, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Shelby Alto, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Rhiannon Miller.
