The Gloucester High School varsity softball team picked up a win, but also suffered a loss during its first week of the regular season. The Lady Dukes opened the 2026 season with a 6-2 win over the Jamestown Eagles on Friday in an away game. Freshman Harper Hardaway pitched 4.1 innings in her first high school pitching victory. Autumn Cookson pitched 2.2 innings to secure the win. Cookson led off the game with a hit by pitch and later scored on a wild pitch for a quick 1-0. Hannah Horsley added an RBI double, scoring Tessa Carteret for a 2-0 lead. Gloucester extended the lead in the fifth inning as Horsley singled, stole second and scored on a Kyndall Sales double. Jamestown scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings with Gloucester leading, 3-2, going into the seventh. Carteret led off the seventh with a double to left field, followed by a Palas single.
