Lady Dukes split final two games

While the Gloucester High School varsity girls’ basketball team was not able to close out the season with a win over Hampton, it did deliver a loss to the Phoebus Phantoms in an overtime thriller in the final week of regular season high school hoops.

Gloucester came out of the gate against Phoebus on Feb. 8, shooting the ball well, and took a 14-6 lead into the second quarter. Their defense remained tough in the second quarter but the offense would cool off slightly, as a 9-6 quarter still favored the Dukes and left the game at 23-12 by halftime.

In the second half the Phantoms would find their rhythm offensively while the Lady Dukes’ offensive possessions largely remained stagnant. Phoebus took a 13-6 advantage in the third quarter and set up a score of 29-25 in favor of the Lady Dukes before the final frame.

Gloucester scored nine points in the quarter but was unable to stop Phoebus from tying the game with a 13-point quarter and sending it to overtime.
