The Gloucester High School varsity girls won a pair of 1-0 games in recent action to stay perfect in Peninsula District soccer. The Lady Dukes beat Warwick at home on Tuesday and got by Menchville on the road on Friday. Gloucester is 5-0 with additional wins over Phoebus, Hampton and Bethel, all of them shutouts.
The Dukes dominated the Raiders in the first half on Tuesday with possession soccer by sophomore midfielders Maegan Beck, Carrie Adams, McKensie Fischer and Audrey Collier. They got the lone goal from Collier midway through the period with a strike from inside the 18 box into the corner of the goal. The second half was more competitive but several key saves by keeper Cheyenne Hogge preserved the win.
Gloucester took down the defending district champions from Menchville Friday with a beautiful header from sophomore Karsyn Wass off a corner kick by Collier. Hogge, aided by defensive backs Briana Norris, Cierra Griffith, Leah Procopi and Wass, protected the shutout.
