Lady Dukes shut out Phantoms, 10-0

Gloucester High School varsity softball players improved to 7-1 on the season with a 10-0 win at Phoebus on Friday as Mackenzie Smith (3-0) tossed her first high school career no-hitter.

The six-foot right-hander struck out seven Phantoms and did not allow a ball out of the infield.

The Dukes had a slow start but scored in the third inning when Malaika Rilee singled and later scored on a single from Laura Tobin for a 1-0 lead.

Gloucester put the game away in the fourth with a nine-run frame. Smith led off the inning with a single and later scored on an error. Emma West contributed a three-run home run over the left-field fence and Jessica Hogge, Courtney Hall and Smith followed with RBIs in the uprising.

Smith handled the rest as she retired the last nine out of 10 batters she faced. Tobin led the Dukes offensively with three hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Gloucester is scheduled to travel to Woodside Friday and host Heritage on Tuesday.   ...
