Lady Dukes score two more shutout victories

Gloucester High School’s Lady Dukes varsity field hockey team enjoyed two victories in a pair of shutouts, defeating Nansemond River 4-0 and cruising to a 21-0 victory over the Phoebus Phantoms.

The Nansemond River game, though a victory, saw the Lady Dukes struggle on offense, at least compared to their usual high scoring standard.

“This team is always tough and we played probably as poorly as we did all year,” said head coach Mike Miller. “Mistakes are going to happen and we were fortunate to win and play a great game defensively.”

Meg Teagle scored the opening goal for Gloucester, with Cara O’Beirne, Hannah Hamay and Tally Vaughan all adding a goal of their own. Kate Neikirk and Allison Goodwin each logged two assists.

“We take pride in putting pressure on the ball,” Miller stated of his team’s defense. This was the sixth shutout on the year for the Lady Dukes, who are anchored in goal by Maggie Ronin and Marie Wilson. ...
