The Gloucester High School varsity girls improved to 9-0 overall and 8-0 in Peninsula District softball standings with a six-run shutout over visiting Woodside on Tuesday. The Dukes remain the only undefeated team in the district, just ahead of Menchville at 6-1. Six of Gloucester’s nine wins have been by shutout.
Makayla Jenkins was in complete control on the mound against the Wolverines, giving up only three hits including two to the infield. She struck out 11 batters with no walks and allowed only two runners to reach second base.
The game stood scoreless going into the top of the sixth inning when Woodside put the lead-off hitter on base with an infield single. A sacrifice bunt moved her to second with one out. Jenkins wiggled out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.
