Lady Dukes post double wins against Denbigh

The Gloucester High School varsity softball team scored double shutout wins against the Denbigh Patriots last week.

The Lady Dukes defeated the Patriots, 31-0, last Tuesday, April 1, on the road. Pitcher Avery West dominated the Patriots both on the mound and the plate as the freshman pitched a perfect game and hit for the cycle.

West achieved all 15 outs and went to a two-ball count only once during the game. Offensively, West had five hits as she singled and hit a three-run home run in the first inning. She doubled in the second and fifth innings and completed the cycle in the fourth inning with a triple. West also drove in eight RBIs during the game.

Autumn Cookson added three hits and four RBIs, while Alexis Dishman also had three hits. Tessa Carteret had two hits and four RBIs and Hannah Horsley, Lilly Hogan and Ava Smith each contributed multiple hits during the game.

Thursday

The Lady Dukes hosted Denbigh last Thursday to defeat the Patriots, 18-0. Cookson, Cameron Palas and Horsley led the Lady Dukes with two hits apiece with Horsley driving in three runs. Addison Keister led Gloucester with four RBIs during the game.

West picked up the win, pitching 3.2 innings of hitless balls with 11 strikeouts. Cookson pitched 1.1 innings as they combined for a no-hitter.

The Lady Dukes entered spring break with an 8-0 record and currently sit as the number one seed in the eastern region.

So far this season, West has recorded a 3-0 pitching record, achieving a perfect game, a no-hitter and two combined no-hitters with Cookson. West has pitched 16 innings with 48 strikeouts. When she is not pitching, West is the third baseman for Gloucester. Offensively, West is hitting a .483 with 21 RBIs.

After spring break, Gloucester will host the Warwick Raiders on Tuesday and will travel to Riverside Elementary School to complete the two-game series with the Raiders next Thursday. First pitch will be at 4:30 p.m. for both games.
