The Gloucester High School varsity softball team picked up wins against Warwick and Menchville this week.
The Lady Dukes achieved another shutout win on the road last Thursday, defeating the Warwick Raiders, 19-0. Pitcher Autumn Cookson (6-0) threw a no-hitter, struck out 14 batters and collected three hits in the win.
Cameron Palas added four hits, including a double and drove in three runs. Avery West had three hits and recorded two RBIs for Gloucester as she doubled and later hit a two-run home run. Hannah Horsley and Tessa Carteret combined for five hits and four RBIs.
Menchville
On Tuesday afternoon, Gloucester traveled to beat the Menchville Monarchs, 5-4. Cookson (7-0) picked up the win with over six innings of work with help from West in the final inning.
Horsley doubled to open the second inning, followed by Carteret who hit a single. With one out, Lilly Hogan singled in Horsley for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Dukes added to their lead as Horsley walked, stole second and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Hogan drove in Horsley with an infield hit, raising the lead to 2-0.
Menchville scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game, which stood until the seventh inning.
Kyndall Sales led off the seventh inning with a walk and made second on a Menchville infield error. West singled to right field as Sales was caught in a rundown between third and home. A throwing error allowed all three players to score, raising Gloucester’s lead to 5-2.
The Lady Monarchs scored two in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4. West ended the game pitching three outs on three ground balls.
GHS hosts Menchville this afternoon at home with a 4:30 p.m. start time, the York Falcons Monday at 5 p.m. and Bethel Tuesday afternoon at 4:30.
