Lady Dukes one win away from state berth

After winning the first Conference 10 championship in the new VHSL alignment, Gloucester High School field hockey players have advanced to an opportunity to play for a state tournament berth. The Dukes were slated to play Kellum yesterday in a regional battle for a state bid.

The Gloucester girls took the conference championship with a 2-1 overtime win over Hickory at Christopher Newport University on Saturday. Hickory was the only team to score on the Dukes during the regular season.

On Saturday, Hickory was also the only team Gloucester had ever found itself trailing. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a penalty stroke. "It was a tough game. I think both teams came out pretty focused," said Gloucester coach Mike Miller.

The teams continued to battle for a score in the second half until Katelyn Curtis tied it for the Dukes with just 1:38 remaining. Five minutes into overtime, Gloucester put the game away when Courtnie Greene sent a shot toward the goal and Kayla Sa...
