Lady Dukes improve to 7-2

The Gloucester High School varsity softball team improved to 7-2 on the season with a pair of recent wins.The Dukes beat visiting Woodside 14-2 last Thursday to celebrate Senior Day. Sierra West gave up four hits and struck out four batters to raise her record to 5-3.

Gloucester scored nine runs in the second inning on five hits with the big blow coming from freshman Sinko VanLiew’s bases-clearing triple. VanLiew would later score on an RBI groundout by Elaina Ward. Sadie Bowden added a two RBI single and Kimber Rainey chipped in with a single and an RBI.

Leighann Harper, Bowden and West each had a single and a double while Grace Saunders contributed two singles in the win.

The Dukes also downed visiting Warwick, 14-1, on May 25. Kaia Hutton (1-0) pitched a one-hit gem and struck out six batters. The freshman also had two hits, including a triple, in the first mound appearance of her career.
