Lady Dukes improve to 7-1

Back on the field after the spring break, the Gloucester High School varsity softball team defeated the home-standing Wilson Presidents, 3-1, in Portsmouth on Monday.

Morgan Haywood (6-1) threw a two-hitter and Kaleigh Arnett had two hits and a seventh-inning RBI to propel the Dukes to a 7-1 record. 

Gloucester took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Macy Robbins’ hard-hit ball came off the Wilson shortstop’s glove, scoring Kirsten Green and Jessica Hogge. Wilson cut the lead to 2-1 on a triple and a fielder’s choice in the sixth inning. 

The Dukes padded their lead to 3-1 in the seventh when Alyssa Shackelford walked, stole second base and scored on single to right field by Arnett. In the bottom of the seventh, Wilson had a runner in scoring position but Haywood ended the game with the last of her nine strikeouts. 

Tuesday’s game at Heritage was rained out but Gloucester will host Warwick on Friday and travel to Bethel Tuesday and Churchlan...
