Lady Dukes improve record to 7-0

Gloucester High School varsity softball players pushed their record to 7-0 entering spring break with a 1-0 decision over Kecoughtan and a 28-0 win at Heritage.

After besting Kecoughtan, 10-0, at GHS on March 26, the Dukes squeaked by the host Warriors, 1-0, last Thursday. Mackenzie Smith (6-0) pitched a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and Kirsten Greene drove in the winning run. 

Gloucester scored the game’s only run in the top of the first inning when Greene lined the first pitch she saw and drove in Laura Tobin with two outs. 

Bridget Motley opened the game with a single but was called out on the next pitch for leaving base early. One out later, Tobin singled and advanced to third on Smith’s single. Tobin came around to score on Greene’s sharply hit single to center field for a 1-0 lead.
