Lady Dukes hand Kecoughtan first loss

Gloucester High School prevailed 1-0 over visiting Kecoughtan on Monday in a battle between two unbeaten softball teams. Morgan Haywood (8-0) pitched a two-hit shutout and blasted a 240-foot shot to left center field to score Alyssa Shackleford for the game’s only run.

Haywood struck out five of the first six Warriors she faced and finished with nine strikeouts and one walk. She gave up a triple in the fourth and a single in the sixth. Haywood pitched out of a two-out, two-on jam in the seventh when she induced a ground ball to Shackleford at short.

The game was still scoreless in the seventh when Shackleford was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second base. With a 0-1 count, Haywood sent her long drive to the left center fence, easily scoring Shackleford.  

Gloucester slugged its way to an 11-1 win over Warwick on Friday. The Dukes had 13 hits, including four for extra bases.
