After being shut out by the Menchville Monarchs on April 30, the Gloucester High School varsity softball team hit the reset button and blanked the visiting Monarchs, 7-0, last Thursday.
The win forced a tie for the Peninsula District title and allowed the Dukes to retake first place in the rankings for the regional tournament.
Gloucester (15-1) had four consecutive hits in the third inning, along with a sacrifice fly to grab a 3-0 lead. Leighann Harper led off the third with a walk. One out later, Malaika Rilee and Bridget Motley each had singles to load the bases.
Laura Tobin and Kirsten Greene followed with RBI singles as the Dukes took a 2-0 lead. Mackenzie Smith followed with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
The Dukes dented the scoreboard again in the fifth as Motley tripled with one out, Tobin walked and Greene was intentionally walked to load the bases. With two outs, a bunt by Courtney Hall drove in Motley and Tobin scored from second to push the lead to 5-0. Emma West&rsquo...
