After winning the Conference 10 Tournament last week, the Gloucester High School varsity girls fell, 5-3, to Hickory in the opening round of the 5A South Regional Field Hockey Tournament on Monday at the National Field Hockey Training Center.
“We gave up the first four goals on corners, which is very unlike us,” said Gloucester coach Mike Miller. “We just didn’t play well, we should have beaten them. We cut it to 4-3 and had chances but didn’t capitalize. We just didn’t put our game together.”
Senior Taylor Green had two goals in the loss and freshman Allison Goodwin had a goal and an assist. Senior Molly Vaughan also contributed an assist as the Dukes, the defending Group 5A state champions, closed out the 2016 season at 18-2.
Menchville, the conference runner-up, also lost in the opening round, 2-0, to Maury. Maury then beat Hickory, 1-0, in the semifinals and will take on Prince George for the regional title.
