Lady Dukes earn spot in state tournament

Making it look easy, the Gloucester High School field hockey team posted 6-0 and 4-0 wins in the VHSL 5A Regional Tournament Friday and Tuesday to earn a spot in the VHSL Class 5 Tournament. 

After a 6-0 win over eighth-seed Salem on Friday, the Dukes outplayed Maury, 4-0. at ODU on Tuesday to get a shot at their second consecutive state championship. The Dukes also won the state title in 2015. 

“I thought we played well,” said GHS coach Mike Miller. “There was a lot of enthusiasm and we had good focus. We were there on a mission and I think we played well together.” 

Meg Teagle scored the first goal of the game, assisted by Cara O’Beirne. Kate Neikirk got the second goal of the first half, assisted by Farren Winter, and it was 2-0 at the break.
