The undefeated Gloucester High School varsity softball team shut out the Smithfield Packers, 10-0, Tuesday night at Stoney Run Athletic Complex, Newport News, in the Class 4 Region A semifinals.
All nine starters recorded at least one hit during the game to complement pitcher Avery West’s four-hit shutout win.
Hannah Horsley led off scoring for the Lady Dukes by hitting a home run over the left centerfield fence in the first inning. Kyndall Sales and Addison Keister both achieved hits in the second inning with Ava Smith recording an RBI to increase Gloucester’s lead by 2-0.
The Lady Dukes (22-0) tacked on three more runs in the third inning with an RBI double by Horsley and an RBI single by Tessa Carteret. Carteret would later score on a Lilly Hogan sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, RBI singles by West, Horsley and Carteret stretched the lead to 8-0. In the fifth and sixth innings, Keister and Sales hit one RBI apiece to achieve a 10-0 win over the Packers.
In the circle, West pitched six innings and allowed only four hits. She struck out six batters and did not issue a single walk.
Horsley, Carteret and Sales led the 17-hit onslaught for Gloucester with three hits apiece, while Cookson and West chipped in with two hits each.
Gloucester will face Warhill this afternoon, Thursday, June 5, at Stoney Run to compete for the Class 4 Region A title. First pitch is scheduled for 5 o’clock. Admission is $10. Regardless of the outcome of today’s game, the GHS girls will advance to the VHSL Class 4 state tournament on Tuesday.
