Lady Dukes defeat previously unbeaten Denbigh in hockey

A 2-1 overtime win over previously undefeated Denbigh last Thursday put the Gloucester High School varsity field hockey squad solidly in first place in Peninsula District rankings. The Lady Dukes are 6-0 in PD play and 8-0 overall with three district match-ups remaining.

The loss dropped the Patriots to 4-1 in the district. Bethel and Menchville trail Denbigh at 3-1 each but there are still several PD games to be played due to rain postponements.

Courtnie Green got the Dukes on the board in the first half at Denbigh with an assist from Breanna Fox. The Patriots also had a first-half goal to make it 1-1 at the break, and the tie lasted through a second-half defensive battle. Five minutes into overtime, Gloucester’s Hannah Joyce hit the game winner with an assist from Green. Joyce’s goal was her second OT game winner for the Dukes.
Gloucester coach Mike Miller said he is extremely proud of his 2011 team, which has seven new starters joining five seniors on the field. ...
