Lady Dukes defeat Mathews, Phoebus

The Gloucester High School varsity softball team picked up two more shutout wins this past week against the Mathews Blue Devils and Phoebus Phantoms.

The Lady Dukes defeated Mathews, 15-0, last Wednesday, May 7, at home. Avery West pitched her third perfect game of the season, striking out 13 batters while allowing only two balls to be put in play.

West also led Gloucester at the plate as she achieved three hits for three at-bats and four RBIs. West hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI in the first inning, a double in the second inning, a two-run home run in the third and an RBI triple in the fourth inning.

Also contributing offensively were Autumn Cookson with two triples, Tessa Carteret with three RBIs and two hits, Cameron Palas with two RBIs and two hits, Alexis Dishman with two RBIs and two hits, Hannah Horsley with two hits and Kyndall Sales with a double and two RBIs.

Phoebus

The Lady Dukes also took a shutout win over Phoebus, 19-0, last Thursday on the road. The game was called after only three innings played.

Cookson pitched her second no-hitter of the season, striking out eight batters. On offense, Gloucester took advantage of 10 walks and eight hit batters. Carteret had two of Gloucester’s four hits, garnering two doubles and three RBIs. Lilly Hogan added a double and two RBIs in the win.

Gloucester will play again on Monday, facing Mathews on the road at 6 p.m. The Lady Dukes will travel to play the Woodside Wolverines on Tuesday and host the Wolverines next Thursday for senior night, where Gloucester will honor its sole senior, Samantha Carlton.

MHS softball

In the other Mathews varsity softball game this week, the Lady Devils defeated Northampton on the road on Friday, 16-9. MHS senior Angel Shultz pitched the entire game, giving up only two earned runs while striking out four.

Addy Griffith led the batters with a triple, two doubles and a single. Other offensive standouts included Addy Lowe (double, two singles), Lindsay Coons (double, two singles), Emily Coons (three singles), Shultz (three singles), McKenzie Bartlett (double, single), Kylee Swanson (two singles) and Bentlea Lawrence and Mya Schroeder (one single each).

Seniors Lindsay Coons and Angel Shultz will be celebrated when the MHS girls host Colonial Beach on Friday for Senior Night. Game time is 5 o’clock.
