Lady Dukes’ comeback falls short as they lose 3-2 in OT

 

After an undefeated run that stretched through the regular season, the regional title and into the state tournament, the Gloucester girls fell, 3-2, in overtime Friday in the semifinals of the Group 5 state field hockey championship held in Virginia Beach.

Deep Run went on to lose, 2-0, to Mountain View on Saturday in the finals of the state tournament played at the Regional Field Hockey Training Center.

 

“I think a lot of people never expected us to get that far,” said Gloucester coach Mike Miller. “When you lose 11 seniors you’re not expected to come back and compete for a state title.” 

Miller’s young team, with just three senior players, found itself down, 2-0, during halftime of the state semifinal. After the break, sophomores Allison Goodwin and Tally Vaughan led a comeback drive.
