Gloucester High School varsity softball players opened Conference 10 play with a pair of wins in recent action.
The Dukes defeated home-standing Warwick, 9-4, on Monday as Morgan Haywood scattered 10 hits, struck out five and gave up two earned runs on the day.
Haywood’s single in the first inning scored Shelby Alto for a quick 1-0 lead. The Dukes then committed two errors and found themselves behind, 2-1, going into the second. Gloucester rebounded with runs in the second and third innings on doubles from Alto and Alissa Upton.
The score was tied, 3-3, going into the top of the fourth when Gloucester put together four hits, including singles by Haywood and Jessica Hogge that each produced two RBIs. The Dukes stretched the lead to 9-3 in the six without the benefit of a hit.
Haywood wiggled in and out of trouble, giving up only a run in the fifth after allowing three early runs. She led Gloucester offensively with three hits and three RBIs. Hogge contributed two RBIs and Upton drove in a run.
The Dukes improved to 14-0 with a 7-3 win at Menchville on Tuesday. Alyssa Shackleford got the Dukes going early with a solo home run over the left field fence.
After two innings and a 1-1 tie, Kaleigh Arnett hit a two-out single to score Nealcyn Watkins and Alto. An infield single by Upton scored Starr Patton for a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Hogge drove in two insurance runs with a single to right center field to score Patton and Arnett. Gloucester gave up two runs in the seventh inning.
Arnett led the Dukes with three hits and two RBIs. Haywood went the distance to improve to 10-0 on the mound. The junior southpaw struck out seven batters and walked one. Gloucester is scheduled to host Indian River today and travel to Hickory on Tuesday. Both games begin at 5 p.m.
