Lady Dukes beat Menchville, 7-6

After a 14-day layoff, the Gloucester High School varsity girls got the softball schedule going again with a 7-6 win over Menchville at Stoney Run in Newport News on Friday. The Dukes committed five errors but survived a poorly played game to stay unbeaten.

Gloucester took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Morgan Haywood hit a single and later scored on a ground ball from Alissa Upton. Menchville tied it at 1-1 but Haywood drove in Macy Robbins, who had doubled, and Shelby Alto, who had walked. Haywood’s single to right field pushed the lead to 3-1 after three innings.

The Dukes extended the lead to 5-1 when Tori Brown singled and scored on a single from Robbins. Alto also singled and scored on a wild pitch. Menchville battled back for a 5-5 tie and the score was knotted again at 6-6 going into the bottom of the seventh.
