Lady Devils win two district games

The Mathews High School varsity softball team scored a pair of victories against Tidewater District opponents during the past week, with wins of 17-3 over West Point last Thursday and 13-3 against Middlesex on Tuesday.

Last Thursday, Mathews traveled to West Point to face the Pointers. Leading the Lady Devils’ offensive onslaught were Morgan Crittenden, Reese Brock, Joice Small, Kelly Britt and Kelsey Ryan, who all collected hits.

Head coach “JJ” Ashberry used five pitchers, one for each inning. Brock, Christiana Wood, Abigail Hudgins, Crittenden and Emily West all saw time on the mound.

West was the winning pitcher for Mathews in Tuesday’s home game against the Middlesex Chargers. Nine Mathews players collected hits in the contest.

Today, the MHS girls will host King William, starting at 5 p.m. Mathews and Gloucester will face off next Wednesday, May 19, at GHS.
