After two scrimmages and one full week of practice, the varsity Lady Blue Devils kicked off their 2010-11 basketball season on Tuesday night, traveling to Lancaster to face the Lady Red Devils.
After their previous disappointing performance against Tabb in a scrimmage, the Mathews High School girls were ready to prove themselves against Lancaster. In the first quarter, neither team could get an organized offense together but the Lady Blue Devils were able to take a 12-10 lead into the second period.
In the second quarter, both teams played aggressive defense and the half ended with freshman Emily Brown hitting a shot at the buzzer to tie the game at 18-all. After being highly motivated during halftime, the Lady Blue Devils came out ready to play in the third quarter, running away with a 37-26 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Red Devils put in a man-to-man defense which allowed Mathews to fast break with short easy passes that resulted in easy layups. Late in the game, MHS ...
