Lady Devils win regional title; advance to state play

The undefeated Mathews High School volleyball team moved one step closer to repeating as state champion following two Region A tournament wins during the past week, beating Washington and Lee and then Middlesex to retake the regional title.

The Lady Devils will host the Region B runner-up (either Riverheads or Altavista) on Saturday. A start time had not been announced at press time. If Mathews wins, it will host the state semifinal game on Tuesday night.

 

In an odd twist, there’s a chance that Mathews may face Middlesex again in Tuesday’s state tournament semifinal game. Mathews defeated the Chargers twice during the regular season, and went on to beat Middlesex last month for the Tidewater District title. On Tuesday night, the Devils took on the Chargers for a fourth time this season in the Region A championship game. But to make it to that contest, Mathews had to get passed Washington and Lee.
