Lady Devils win opening scrimmage against York, 32-28

The Mathews High School girls’ basketball team opened up its 2017-2018 season last week with a scrimmage against York. Mathews defeated the visiting Falcons last Thursday in the preseason tune-up, 32-28.

The Lady Devils have a new head coach. C.K. Ambrose is taking over the reins from Tommy Eriksen, who stepped down after four seasons.

Mathews also has three returning players from last year’s varsity squad—Yolanda Fells, Ellie Armistead and Hannah Robins. Jade Davis and Skyller Worley have varsity experience also.

The scrimmage started rusty in the first half with MHS, only scoring 10 points. Armistead contributed five of those points, Stacie Thomas had three points, and Davis had two.

After the first half, the Devils knocked the rust off and came alive. They scored close to double in the second half. Armistead totaled 15 from both outside and inside the paint, Thomas had five from inside the paint and foul line, and Davis added another two points.
