Lady Devils win one, drop one

The Mathews High School varsity softball team lost its bid to repeat as Tidewater District regular season champs, following a 3-0 loss Monday night to King William. In other recent action, the Lady Devils easily defeated West Point last Thursday, 12-1.

The Devils traveled Monday to King William to face the Lady Cavaliers. The Devils had previously lost to the Cavs earlier and were looking to redeem themselves. In the first matchup, the Cavaliers’ pitcher dominated the Devil hitters, striking out most of the batters.

This time around, for the first three innings, Mathews put the bat on the ball aggressively, but always to a Cavalier player for an easy out. In the bottom of the third inning, the Mathews defense fell apart. With back-to-back errors and then a drive to left field the Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead. Mathews squandered a scoring opportunity in the sixth when, after the lead-off batter reached base, the next three struck out.
