Lady Devils win district, advance in region

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team earned the Tidewater District regular season title by virtue of going unbeaten against district opponents. Last Wednesday, the girls added the title of district tournament champs by defeating Middlesex, 8-1.

On Monday, the MHS girls shut out Franklin 5-0 in the Region 1A Team Quarterfinals, advancing to yesterday’s regional semifinals against #1 seed Rappahannock at Middlesex High School.

In last Wednesday’s Middlesex match, top-seeded singles player Avery Betz suffered the only loss for the Devils, falling to Hanna Jackson by scores of 6-2, 6-0. At number two, Caroline Evans defeated Sierra Funk 6-0, 6-1 and at three Connie Johnson also won 6-0, 6-1 against Vivian Reinhardt.
