Lady Devils’ unbeaten streak comes to an end

While the Mathews High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team is still undefeated, the same can’t be said for the varsity Lady Devils following Tuesday night’s 46-39 loss to Conference 42 foe Middlesex.

With the loss, the varsity Devils are now 9-1 overall; 2-1 in conference play. On Monday, the girls won their ninth straight game, beating the visiting Rappahannock Raiders, 46-33.

Tuesday’s contest on the road against Middlesex was a hard-fought battle. Mathews accomplished its goal of limiting the impact of the Chargers’ standout guard, Emilie Smith. Smith was held to 11 points, most, if not all, of which were scored on transition. Prior to the contest, she had averaged 20+ points per game.

However, the normal, overall outstanding defensive effort for the Lady Devils was not present and Mathews was also unable to take advantage of Middlesex foul trouble, sinking only eight of 17 from the line. Although Mathews was able to hang tough and keep the ...
