After posting 3-0 victories this past week over Rappahannock and West Point high schools, the Mathews High School volleyball team has won the Group 1A East Region championship.

Mathews advances to Saturday’s state quarterfinal match against the Region B runner-up (which will either be Altavista or Rappahannock County). The Lady Devils will host this game. Game time has yet to be set, but Mathews is hoping the game will start at 6. West Point, meanwhile, will travel to the Region B champion.

The top-seeded Lady Devils hosted Rappahannock High School in last Thursday’s regional semifinal game, with a bid to the state tournament on the line. Mathews responded to the pressure with grace and skill, defeating the Raiders, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-14.

Leading the team in kills was Anne Stewart with 11, followed by Belle Massimino with nine. Tori Hicks and Sarah Brown led the team with three aces apiece. Brown added 25 assists for the game. Victoria Bing had 13 digs for the game, fol...
