Lady Devils to play for state title Saturday

It wasn’t an easy path—the Lady Devils had to survive a thrilling come-from-behind five-set match against the reigning state champions in Radford Tuesday night—but the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team earned the right to play for the Virginia Group 1A title at 11 a.m. this Saturday at VCU’s Siegel Center in Richmond.

Mathews will have to face Rappahannock County, the same team that beat the Lady Devils, 3-0, last Saturday in the Region 1A East title game. Despite that loss, Mathews earned a state playoff bid, thanks to a straight-set victory last Thursday over Northumberland.

Richmond’s Siegel Center is familiar territory for the Lady Devils, who won back-to-back state titles in 2011 and 2012. The last trip Mathews made to VCU was in 2014, when the Devils fell to Auburn in the state championship game.
