Lady Devils suffer tough extra-innings loss to Cavaliers

The Mathews High School varsity softball team returned to action last Thursday after a week off for spring break. The MHS girls hosted the King William Cavaliers and suffered a tough 2-0 loss in an eight-inning game.

The Lady Devils are now 4-3 on the season. Madison Owens pitched the entire eight innings for Mathews, striking out 10 batters while walking three. She gave up nine hits and one earned run.

The Cavaliers threatened in the fourth inning when they had the bases loaded with one out and again in the sixth with runners at second and third and no outs. The Devils played solid defense and were able to get out of those jams.

However, King William would eventually score in the top of the eighth inning. A leadoff double, a sac bunt, and a single to center enabled the first KW runner to score. The second would score on a failed pick-off attempt at third base later in the inning.
