Lady Devils still looking for first win

The Mathews High School varsity softball team is still looking for its first win following a pair of games against Northumberland and a contest against the Rappahannock Raiders. The 0-3 Lady Devils travel to Richmond County tonight to face the Raiders for a second time.

Mathews lost to Northumberland, 9-0, in the March 12 season opener. The Devils were held to a single hit, a single by freshman Joice Small. Caroline Crittenden and Abbie Hudgins shared pitching duties.

In last Thursday’s home game against Rappahannock, Mathews took an early 1-0 lead but ended up falling to the Raiders, 3-1. Crittenden led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, driven home by a second single by Small. Those were the only two hits Mathews was able to get in the entire game. Crittenden and Hudgins were the pitchers of record.
