Lady Devils still looking for a win on the diamond

 

Three games into the 2018 season, the Mathews High School varsity softball team is still looking for its first win.

In last Thursday’s season opener, the Lady Devils fell by a 9-1 margin to the visiting Northumberland Indians. On Friday, the MHS girls lost on the road to Windsor, 7-5. On Monday, the girls dropped to 0-3 following a 6-2 loss to Rappahannock.

Against Northumberland, Ellie Armistead led the Mathews offense, going 2-for-3 with two singles and a run scored. Ashley Foster had the only RBI for Mathews, hitting Armistead in on a defensive error in the bottom of the sixth. 

Defensively, the Devils finished with three errors. The Indians had 16 hits to holes in the field. The Devils finished with two hits, which is a big reason why they lost.

On Friday, the Devils traveled to Windsor. The Mathews defense allowed nine hits, and seven runs to score while committing no errors. The MHS offense racked up four hits and five runs. Abbie Hudgins, Armistead, Foster...
