Lady Devils split pair; record at 7-4

The Mathews High School varsity softball team won big over Charles City on Monday but suffered a loss to King William for the second time this season on Tuesday.

MHS defeated Charles City, 23-0, in five easy innings. The Lady Devils batted .500 as a team, led by Kelly Adams who was 2-for-3 and Hunter Thomas and Lexie Miles who were each 3-for-5. Adams pitched the first two innings of the game for Mathews surrendering no hits, no walks and striking out five batters. Madison Owens pitched the remaining three innings giving up just one hit while walking none and striking out seven.

Mathews traveled to King William on Tuesday where they were shut out by the Cavaliers, 3-0. Unlike the first time the two teams met this season when the game was scoreless after seven complete innings, King William scored early, crossing the plate once in the first inning and twice in the second.
