Lady Devils’ softball

The Mathews High School varsity softball team opened its 2021 season this week, dropping a pair of games to Northumberland and King William. In Monday’s home opener against Northumberland, the Indians overpowered the Lady Devils, 8-1. Emily West (above), Abbie Hudgins and Christiana Wood recorded the team’s only hits. On Tuesday, three King William pitchers combined for a no-hitter, blanking MHS, 12-0. Coach J.J. Ashberry and his Lady Devils will look to get into the win column on Monday when they travel to Tappahannock to face St. Margaret’s School. The girls’ next home game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 11 against Middlesex.
