Lady Devils remain perfect in cross country

The Mathews High School girls’ cross country team kept its unbeaten streak alive, improving to 12-0, after winning last Wednesday’s meet against Northumberland, King William and the host Lancaster Red Devils.

The MHS girls ended the day with 18 points against King William (54), Lancaster (56) and Northumberland (forfeit). The boys’ squad placed second to Lancaster (29) with 37 points, but defeated King William (67) and Northumberland (110).

Nancy Barnhardt led the charge for the Lady Blue Devils with a time of 22:47. The Mathews girls took the top four places in the race, with Katie Phillips (23:55), Kate van Emmerik (24:02) and Stephanie Jeffers (24:32) following Barnhardt. Finishing off the girls’ top seven were Kristen Fauber (26:31) and Carlyn Tillage (29:03). Notable junior varsity finishes include Ryann Smith (24:17) and Sami Stroup (25:23).
