Lady Devils rally to defeat Indians, 4-3

The Mathews High School varsity softball team improved to 3-0 with a victory over Northumberland last Thursday. It wasn’t easy, as the Lady Devils were down to their last out, trailing 3-1, when they finally came to life to rally for a 4-3 win.

Mathews struck first, scoring one run on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. There would not be another run scored in the game until the top of the sixth inning when Northumberland crossed the plate to even the score at 1-1.

The Indians added two more in the top of the seventh inning which put Mathews trailing 3-1 headed into its final at bat. Although Mathews had seven hits through the first six innings, the team had not looked too impressive at the plate. The Devils also had seven strikeouts in those first six innings, in six of which the batter went down looking.
