Lady Devils post tennis wins over GHS, West Point

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team advanced its record to 3-2 this week by defeating the Lady Dukes of Gloucester, 6-3, and the Lady Pointers of West Point, 6-3. Mathews also played Rappahannock High School, but lost to the Raiders, 7-2.

Last Tuesday, Mathews started off their week back from spring break by traveling to play the Lady Dukes at Gloucester High School. Mathews started out strong in singles with number-one seed Avery Betz, using her consistent and smart shots to defeat Destiny Morales, 8-5. Number two for Mathews, Caroline Evans, followed in Betz’s footsteps by defeating Hailey Brown with the identical 8-5 victory. Connie Johnson, number three for Mathews, was victorious over Maggie Dye in a straight 8-0 set victory by using her aggressive shots throughout the match.
