Lady Devils pick up two hard-fought victories

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team earned two hard-fought wins this week over King William and West Point, improving to 16-1 on the season.

Last Thursday, MHS hosted the King William Cavaliers, a team they had easily beaten early in the season by a 21-point margin. This contest, however, proved to be much different.

Mathews struggled offensively but was able to keep the game close with good defense and came out on top, 28-24.

Savanna Wooten led MHS in scoring, hitting three three-point shots and going 3-for-4 from the line for a 12-point night. Hallie Duncan added six points for the Devils while Maria Spadaccini, Mariah Robinson and Sarah Brown scored five, three and two points, respectively.
