Lady Devils open volleyball season with Jamboree

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team kicked off its pre-season play with an away scrimmage against Woodside High School last Wednesday. 

The teams played five sets with Mathews coming out on top in four of the five. On Saturday, the Lady Devils hosted their sixth annual Mathews Volleyball Jamboree. Along with Mathews, Warhill, Menchville, Lafayette and Warwick participated in the jamboree.

Each team played two sets with every other team in a scrimmage-like atmosphere, allowing MHS head coach Pat Moughon to experiment with various lineups and positions on the court. The Lady Devils went 5-3 on the day, losing both sets to Warhill and one to Lafayette. The 2014 varsity squad has eight returning players. They include seniors Sophia Bandurco, Kai McCann, Morgan Driskell and Allison Foster, juniors Brittany Mitchem and Mariah Robinson, and sophomores Keely Crittenden and Madison South.
