Lady Devils off to 2-0 start

The Mathews High School varsity softball team began its season with easy victories over Lafayette and Charles City during the past week.

Despite committing three errors and totaling only 11 hits, the Devils defeated the Rams, 21-2, last Thursday. Lafayette surrendered 21 walks in the contest.

Madison South pitched the entire five-inning game for Mathews. She gave up four hits while striking out six and walking two. Lexie Miles led MHS at the plate going 2-for-2 with a single, a double, three RBIs and a walk. South was 1-for-1 with a single, four walks, and two RBIs. Keely Crittenden was 1-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBIs.

Mathews traveled to Charles City on Monday for another easy matchup with the Panthers. The final score was 24-0. South threw the first two innings, striking out two, walking one, and allowing no hits. Taylor Locey pitched the final three innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out seven.
