Lady Devils improve to 7-2

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team added six wins during the week while suffering a single defeat to improve its overall season record to 7-2.

Last Thursday, the Lady Devils hosted the Northumberland Indians in a rematch of their season opener in which Mathews fell and this time the Devils won in consecutive sets, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-12.

Brittany Mitchem led the Devils in kills with 10 followed by Mariah Robinson with eight, Hallie Duncan with four, Belle Massimino with three, and Anne Stewart with two. Leading in digs was Keely Crittenden with 14; Massimino had seven, Robinson and Josey Bauby each had six, and Mitchem and Madison South each had five. South also had 26 assists.

Mathews participated in the “Endless Summer” tournament held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton on Saturday. MHS won all three of their pool matches (best two of three) in the white division of the tournament. They defeated Maggie Walker, 25-19 and 25-11, Gloucester, 25-22 and ...
