Lady Devils improve to 17-0

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team improved to a perfect 17-0 overall and 4-0 in the district with wins this past week over Tidewater District foes West Point and Middlesex.

The Lady Devils defeated the visiting Pointers last Thursday in three straight sets, 25-10, 25-16 and 25-9. Highlights of the match include Whitney Eriksen’s five aces, Mackenzie Moughon’s eight kills, Shelby Ware’s 18 assists and Rachel Close’s three digs.

Kacie Austin followed Eriksen with three aces, and she was trailed by Close and Ware with two aces apiece. Maddie McCann contributed six kills, followed by Austin with three kills, Hannah Rowe and Teeny Robbins with two kills apiece, and Amber Burruss, Hailey Abernathy, Ware and Kai McCann with one each.

The Pointers were unable to mount a strong offense, as the Devils’ hard attacks kept them on their heels throughout the contest.
