Lady Devils improve record to 4-1

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 4-1 with wins last week over Rappahannock, Northumberland and Charles City. Games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday were postponed when the opponents’ schools closed because of the recent snowstorm.

The girls are scheduled to get back on the court tonight when they travel to West Point to face the Pointers. On Monday, the MHS girls will host Washington and Lee, with the junior varsity game beginning at 5:30.

Rappahannock

The Lady Devils traveled to Warsaw last Wednesday to face the Rappahannock Raiders. In a hard-fought battle against a good opponent, Mathews came out on top, 56-52.

In the first quarter, the Devils had scored three times as many points as the Raiders, 21-7. But in the second quarter, Mathews slacked off on both sides of the ball, allowing the Raiders to take a one-point lead into halftime, 26-25.
